What is Redpen AI?
Redpen AI helps teachers spend less time marking and more time teaching, turning handwritten pupil work into personalised feedback and meaningful insights in minutes.
Built specifically for schools, Redpen uses artificial intelligence to assess pupils' handwritten work against curriculum objectives and teacher-defined success criteria. It identifies strengths, highlights areas for improvement and generates clear, actionable feedback tailored to each pupil.
Unlike traditional assessment tools, Redpen works with the handwritten work pupils already produce in their exercise books. There's no need to change how lessons are taught, introduce additional assessments or require pupils to type their work.
How does Redpen work?
- Capture pupil work: Teachers or pupils simply photograph handwritten work using a phone or tablet. A simple QR code system means no pupil logins or individual devices are required.
- Generate personalised feedback: Redpen reads and analyses the handwriting, producing curriculum-aligned feedback that celebrates achievements, identifies gaps and recommends next steps. Teachers remain in control, reviewing and editing feedback before sharing it.
- Track progress automatically: Every assessment contributes to an ongoing picture of pupil attainment. Redpen tracks demonstrated skills against curriculum objectives, helping teachers identify learning gaps, monitor progress and plan targeted support without additional data entry.
More than just marking
Redpen is designed to make formative assessment genuinely useful. Rather than simply generating comments on individual pieces of work, it helps teachers understand how each pupil is progressing over time and where their attention will have the greatest impact.
Teachers can quickly identify common misconceptions across a class, recognise pupils who need additional support and make informed decisions about what to teach next.
Built around teachers, not to replace them
We believe AI should enhance teachers' professional judgement, not replace it. Redpen keeps teachers at the centre of every assessment, giving them control over feedback while removing much of the repetitive administrative work.
Currently available for Key Stage 1 and 2 English writing, Redpen is helping schools reduce marking workload, provide more consistent and personalised feedback, and make better use of assessment information. KS3 is currently available for select schools.
Our mission is simple: to ensure every child gets the individual attention they deserve by giving teachers the time and tools to deliver it.
