What is Astar Writing?

Astar Writing generates original practice papers with matching mark schemes, then gives first-pass comments on student scripts against that paper's own rubric. Teachers can upload typed, PDF, or scanned handwritten work — up to 30 files at once — and receive a criterion-by-criterion breakdown covering the band descriptors and assessment objectives, along with a downloadable feedback PDF for each student. Grading strictness can be adjusted across five levels from lenient to harsh.

The tool covers subjects including General Paper, English and Business, with dedicated rubrics for formats such as individual reports, team projects, A-Level research reports, English coursework and PDQ portfolios. A newer module handles Cambridge PDQ Module 2 and Module 3 evidence, scored against the publicly available Distinction, Pass and Fail criteria. The vendor is clear that this is formative practice feedback rather than official marking, and that teachers remain the examiner.

Plans range from a free tier with five submissions a month to individual subscriptions and a school plan with multi-teacher access, bulk upload, an analytics dashboard and exam paper generation. Payment is by card or cryptocurrency through NOWPayments.

Recommended Usage

Feedback is generated in under a minute per upload; teachers can batch-grade a class in one session, and submission limits range from 5 per month (Free/Student tiers) to unlimited (Pro/School tiers)..
